Catron County Health Council

The Catron County Health Council is a community-based forum for assessment, promotion, and improvement of the health and well-being of county residents. Health in its purest state is a condition of translucent radiance; unimpeded by the forces of disease, defect, pain and ignorance. It is a state of complete spiritual, mental, emotional, physical and environmental well-being. We envision a coherent and cohesive community; involved and dedicated to the improvement of the quality of life and the elimination of the barriers that separate us from each other; and from perfect health. Our distinct cultural differences, distant...

Behavioral Health Grassroots Committee

The Behavioral Health Grassroots Group is the behavioral health committee of the Catron County Health Council. Although the Health Council has had behavioralhealth, especially substance abuse, as a priority issue often during its history, and has worked diligently as part of Local Collaborative 7, it was only with the vision of a group of Reserve consumers that behavioral health concerns took a front seat in our efforts. We are working to create a wellness center or health commons on a site donated by a local family and simultaneously working to bring behavioral health services into the...

Catron County Indigent Fund

The Catron County Health Council sought to address a county-wide problem severely felt by the medically uninsured due to the lack of any healthcare safety net. In 2008 the Catron County Commission recognized the need and enacted a gross receipts tax dedicated to the care of indigent...

History of the Health Council

 • PDF

The Catron County Health Advisory Council (CCHAC) was initiated in 1991 by the County Manager primarily to recruit and retain primary health care providers to the area and to integrate public health and primary care services.

From its inception, however, it has been active in assessment and planning for health care in the County as well as serving as an oversight committee for the Catron County Medical Center run by Presbyterian Medical Services (PMS).

In 2001 PMS decided to appoint a regional guidance council and no longer use the CCHAC as its local oversight council.

This coincided with the Council’s decision to expand its role and to apply for funding through the Improving Health Initiative. In 2003 the Commission enlarged the mission of the Council to include the Community Maternal and Child Health Council roles and activities, since then, we have worked on Substance Abuse, Wellness and Access, Cancer, Elder Care, Indigent Fund and Behavorial Health.
